Gamescom apologizes for response to indie developer hardware thefts
Gamescom organizers have issued a formal apology following widespread criticism regarding their handling of hardware thefts at the 2026 event. Several indie developers, including Ryan Laley (Mimic), reported the theft of laptops and essential equipment from their booths, which caused significant financial and professional setbacks.
The controversy stemmed from an initial response by Gamescom that many attendees and exhibitors viewed as insensitive, as it suggested that participants should have secured individual stand protection and insurance. Organizers admitted that their first communication ‘did not hit the right tone’ and failed to show the empathy deserved by those affected.
In response to the backlash, Gamescom announced plans to review security measures specifically for indie exhibitors. The organizers also intend to host a roundtable discussion with developers of shared indie booths to develop improved safety protocols for future events.
