GameStop to reopen select stores as insiders invest in retailer

GameStop has announced it will begin reopening “select” stores across the United States starting September 11. While the company has not released a full list of locations, a spokesperson confirmed that at least one store in Brooklyn, Ohio, is included in the initial rollout. This move follows a period of significant cost-cutting and hundreds of store closures intended to reshape the retailer's operations.

The reopening coincides with new investments from company insiders. CEO Ryan Cohen purchased 1 million shares of Class A common stock on September 10 for approximately $20.4 million. Additionally, board member Alain Attal purchased 5,000 shares for roughly $100,000 on the same day.

Data indicates a shift in GameStop’s revenue streams, with sales moving away from traditional video game software toward collectibles. Trading cards and other collectibles accounted for 45.1% of net sales in the most recent quarter, a significant increase from approximately 29% in fiscal 2025. Collectibles sales specifically grew by 57% compared to the same quarter last year.
