Gaming hardware sales hit 13-year low amid rising console prices

The gaming hardware market is experiencing a significant downturn, with August sales hitting a 13-year low. According to data from Circana, global gaming hardware sales fell 15% year-over-year, while consumer spending in the sector dropped 3% in August and 11% cumulatively this year.

Industry analysts attribute this decline to rising hardware prices driven by semiconductor shortages and increased component costs. Major manufacturers, including Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo, have implemented price hikes to offset these expenses. In the United States, PlayStation 5 sales dropped 25% compared to the previous year, reaching their lowest levels since 2013. Xbox hardware sales saw a 33% decline, marking a historic low for the brand.

Specific price adjustments have impacted consumer accessibility. Microsoft's Xbox Series X models have seen increases of up to $150, while Sony's PlayStation 5 Pro and digital editions have also seen significant price climbs. Analysts express concern that these high entry costs may deter consumers from purchasing hardware, even with highly anticipated upcoming releases like ‘GTA6’ expected to drive demand.
