Gaming industry expands through Apple hardware and cultural shifts
Apple is expanding its presence in the gaming sector through strategic initiatives like Apple Arcade, which offers ad-free gaming experiences. Reports indicate the company is also developing two distinct game controllers to better integrate gaming across its Mac, iPhone, and iPad ecosystem.
A global study by Havas, titled ‘Open World: The Cultural Expansion of Gaming’, highlights the growing cultural influence of the industry, which is valued at approximately US$184 billion with over 3.2 billion players worldwide. The report suggests that gaming is increasingly viewed as an extension of reality rather than just an escape, serving as a platform for social connection, identity expression, and skill development.
In Australia, the study found that 59% of Prosumer gamers consider gaming an essential part of their lives. Many participants reported that gaming fosters meaningful social connections and can benefit mental wellbeing when practiced responsibly. Additionally, 96% of Australian Prosumers believe games can teach crucial skills, such as strategic thinking and problem-solving.
