Gaming industry experts warn of risks for next-gen consoles

Industry veterans and recent recruitment trends suggest significant challenges facing the next generation of gaming consoles, specifically the PlayStation 6 and Xbox Helix.

Former PlayStation Studios head Shawn Layden expressed pessimism regarding new hardware adoption, citing high potential price points of $1,000 and a lack of software variety at launch. Layden noted that diminishing returns on technological leaps, such as ray tracing or frame rate increases, may make consumers less willing to upgrade. Additionally, Shuhei Yoshida suggested the industry should move away from a singular focus on raw processing power.

Simultaneously, Sony Interactive Entertainment is actively recruiting a global team, including a Global Director of Advertising Technology, to find ways to connect advertisers directly to players on the PS5 and PlayStation Network. This move toward monetizing the ecosystem through advertisements—ranging from dashboard banners to potential in-game integration—comes as companies seek new revenue streams to offset high development costs and hardware expenses.
