Gaming industry shifts toward console exclusivity and next-gen hardware

Major gaming hardware manufacturers and publishers are shifting their strategies regarding platform exclusivity. Sony has reinforced its commitment to the PlayStation 5, releasing a video highlighting upcoming exclusive titles such as Marvel’s Wolverine, Ghost of Yotei, Astro Bot, Gran Turismo 7, Saros, and God of War Laufey. This move comes amid consumer backlash regarding Sony’s plan to stop producing disc versions for new games starting in 2028.

In contrast, Microsoft appears to be moving away from its multiplatform approach. While titles like Minecraft Dungeons 2 will remain available on multiple platforms, recent indicators suggest a potential return to console-centric exclusivity for certain major franchises under new leadership.

On the publishing side, THQ Nordic has announced it is developing 29 games with a significant focus on the transition to Nintendo’s next-generation hardware, referred to as the Switch 2. The publisher confirmed that while current hardware will still receive support, its primary technological innovations are being directed toward the upcoming successor to ensure a robust software catalog for the new ecosystem.
