GaN semiconductor technology expands for AI and automotive markets
The semiconductor industry is seeing expanded development in Gallium Nitride (GaN) technology to support high-efficiency power needs in AI data centers, automotive, and aerospace sectors.
Polar Semiconductor and Imec have announced a partnership to provide 8-inch production of e-mode GaN devices. Through a license transfer agreement for Imec’s GaN-on-Si process, Polar will manufacture these devices at its foundry in Bloomington, Minnesota. The collaboration aims to serve voltage ranges from 40V to 650V, with plans to expand for applications like 800V to 12V conversion in data centers.
Separately, Taiwan-based GaNrich is expanding its GaN power component lineup, covering a wide voltage range from 40V to 1200V. Utilizing both GaN-on-Si and GaN-on-Sapphire platforms, the company targets AI servers, robotics, drones, and electric vehicles. GaNrich aims to provide a competitive non-red supply chain option by integrating design, manufacturing, and verification services.
