Gander prepares for 25th anniversary of 9/11 commemorations

As the 25th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks approaches, the town of Gander, Newfoundland, is preparing for commemorative events honoring the community's humanitarian response in 2001. During the attacks, Gander International Airport became a refuge for 38 diverted aircraft carrying over 6,500 passengers. Local residents provided food, shelter, and support to the stranded travelers during the crisis.

To mark the occasion, Historica Canada has released a new Heritage Minute, a short film series, to honor the town's generosity and compassion. This story of community spirit was previously popularized by the musical ‘Come From Away’.

Commemorative activities include a celebration at Gander International Airport and an upcoming visit by U.S. Ambassador Pete Hoekstra on September 11. American passengers who were among those stranded, such as Sue Riccardelli and Maureen Murray, are returning to the town to express their gratitude and reinforce the bond between the United States and Canada.
