Gander commemorates 25 years of 9/11 solidarity

The town of Gander, Newfoundland, marked the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks with a ceremony honoring the community's historic hospitality. Following the closure of U.S. airspace in 2001, Gander became a refuge for approximately 6,600 to 7,000 stranded passengers from 38 diverted aircraft. Residents provided food, shelter, and support, an act of solidarity that inspired the musical ‘Come From Away’.

During the commemorative event, former Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chrétien delivered a pointed message to the United States, stating, “Never mistake our generosity for weakness.” His remarks arrived amidst heightened economic tensions and a trade war between Canada and the U.S. under the Trump administration.

Despite current political and trade frictions, local leaders and attendees emphasized that the human connections forged during the 2001 crisis transcend modern geopolitical disputes.
