Gander, Newfoundland, honored for humanitarian role during 9/11

The community of Gander, Newfoundland, is being honored through new cultural projects commemorating its role during the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Following the grounding of international air traffic, the residents of Gander provided aid and hospitality to approximately seven thousand stranded passengers and crew members.

This historical event served as the inspiration for the acclaimed musical ‘Come From Away,’ written by Irene Sankoff and David Hein. The production, which features an ensemble cast and folk-infused score, has been performed globally and won both a Tony Award and multiple Drama Desk Awards.

Additionally, a new Heritage Minute has been produced to document the town's actions. Directed by Deanne Foley and produced by Elemental Pictures, the short film features local volunteers and actors re-enacting the efforts of first responders, pilots, and community members who assisted the travelers. The project aims to ensure the story remains part of the permanent Canadian historical record.
