Gandhinagar marks 61 years as Gujarat’s planned capital

On 2 August 1965 the foundation stone of Gandhinagar, Gujarat’s new capital, was laid on the banks of the Sabarmati River. Over six decades the city has evolved into the political and administrative heart of the state and is widely recognised for its clean, green environment. A Gujarat CMO release noted, “Over the decades, Gandhinagar has earned several identities. It was initially recognised as the Gandhian City… later earned the reputation of an Unpolluted City, while its extensive tree cover made it widely known as the Green City.”

Recent development was driven by initiatives introduced by Narendra Modi while he was chief minister, including GIFT City, Mahatma Mandir, digital infrastructure, metro connectivity and internationally renowned institutions. Under current chief minister Bhupendra Patel the city continues its planned growth, celebrating 61 years of its vision‑driven design.
