Ganga river erosion sweeps away century-old temple in Bihar

Severe riverbank erosion caused by the Ganga river has destroyed a century-old Chaiti Durga temple in the Raghopur area of Bihar's Bhagalpur district. Video footage circulating on social media shows the religious structure being swallowed by fast-flowing waters within seconds.

Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary described the situation in Raghopur as “challenging and difficult,” noting that unexpected changes in the river's flow, heavy silt deposition, and strong currents have triggered erosion at multiple locations. Officials have been deployed to assess the damage and implement measures to control the erosion, particularly around the vulnerable Mahadevpur embankment.

Bhagalpur District Magistrate Alankrita Pandey has urged residents to prioritize the safety of people, livestock, and essential belongings while following official advisories. Authorities are on high alert and are preparing for potential evacuations, including the arrangement of relief camps and community kitchens to support affected residents.
