Gangnam and Dongjak districts finalize supplementary budgets

Several South Korean local government districts and educational bodies have announced significant budgetary updates.

Gangnam-gu has finalized its first supplementary budget of the current administration, totaling approximately 47.8 billion won. The funds are prioritized for welfare, social safety nets, reconstruction support, and future industries. The district applied a ‘three-no principle’ to eliminate unnecessary or unclear expenditures, reallocating 3.5 billion won from restructured costs toward public welfare and safety infrastructure.

Dongjak-gu has also approved a supplementary budget of 48.9 billion won, a 4.93% increase over its previous budget. This allocation focuses on public safety, such as building demolition for resident security, winter snow removal measures, and urban landscape improvements. It also includes funding for youth education centers and local economic revitalization through gift certificate support.

Meanwhile, the Korea Association of Education Superintendents expressed concerns regarding the upcoming local education financial grant. Although the government's proposed budget shows a nominal increase of over 7 trillion won compared to the original budget, superintendents warn that the actual financial situation may worsen. They cited rising personnel costs, the transfer of education tax funds to higher education, and the expiration of certain temporary revenue sources as major challenges to stable educational operations.
