Gangnam District introduces AI translation at service counters

The Gangnam District Office in Seoul has introduced a ‘Real-Time Transparent OLED Communication Window’ to improve administrative services for foreign residents and hearing-impaired citizens. The system integrates transparent OLED displays with artificial intelligence to provide real-time speech-to-text transcription and translation in 130 different languages.

When a staff member or visitor speaks into a microphone, the AI processes the audio and displays the conversation as subtitles on the transparent screen. This allows users to maintain eye contact and natural body language while overcoming language barriers or hearing difficulties. The technology was developed through a ‘private-public cooperation open innovation’ initiative.

The pilot units have been installed at the passport and health administration departments. When not in use for consultations, the screens function as digital information boards to display municipal news, public health protocols, and civic service updates. The district plans to review the system's accuracy and usability before considering an expansion to other community centers.
