Gangnam-gu reports four consecutive years of rising birth rates

Gangnam-gu, a district in Seoul, has reported a continuous increase in the number of births for four consecutive years from 2023 to 2026. In the first half of the current year, the district recorded 1,629 births, a 13.2% increase compared to the same period last year. The district's administration attributes this trend to comprehensive policies covering pregnancy, childbirth, and childcare.

Key economic supports include childbirth and childcare subsidies: 2 million won for the first and second child, 3 million won for the third, and 5 million won for the fourth child or more. For families with a first child, total benefits including national and city support can reach approximately 7.9 million won in the first month. Additionally, the district provides infertility treatment costs regardless of income level.

To encourage paternal involvement, Gangnam-gu introduced a 'Father's Childcare Leave Incentive,' providing 300,000 won per month for up to one year to eligible men. The district has also allocated 12.2 billion won for child care services, the highest among Seoul's autonomous districts, and plans to expand part-time childcare providers from seven to ten locations by 2030.
