Gangnam residents dispute Suseo-Gwangju railway route safety

Residents of the Gangnam Hanyang Sujain Apartment in Seoul are in a dispute with the Korea National Railway over the Suseo-Gwangju double-track railway route. The residents' emergency committee has filed a request for mediation with the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission, citing safety concerns.

Key points of contention include potential ground subsidence, vibration, and noise. Residents claim that design documents show a tunnel passing as close as 50cm to certain apartment buildings, contradicting previous reports suggesting an 8m clearance. They are requesting that the route be adjusted toward the Tancheon stream to ensure safety.

The Korea National Railway has maintained that expected ground subsidence remains within safety standards. However, residents argue that the cumulative impact of existing underground facilities, such as the SRT and GTX-A, must be rigorously verified. The residents have stated they do not oppose the railway itself but are demanding a route adjustment to mitigate risks.
