Gani Geci ordered into 30-day pre-trial detention in Kosovo

The Basic Court in Prishtina has ordered a 30-day pre-trial detention for former deputy Gani Geci, who is suspected of threatening journalist Lirim Mehmetaj. The prosecution alleges that the incident occurred on October 11, 2026, at the offices of the Vox Kosova portal.

According to the prosecution, Geci allegedly used threatening language, including statements such as, “If you don't remove the post or don't change it, we are going to die,” in an attempt to force Mehmetaj to alter a Facebook post regarding deputy Fatos Geci. The prosecution further claims that Geci waited near a television studio for approximately two hours to confront the journalist, causing fear and anxiety.

Gani Geci has denied the allegations, stating in court that he never threatened anyone and was merely seeking protection for his family. His defense attorney, Besnik Berisha, argued that the detention is legally inappropriate and lacks necessary conditions, noting that the actions were intended to protect the family from being associated with Serbia. The defense plans to appeal the decision to the Court of Appeals.
