The Gann Fire ignited on Monday, Aug. 4, 2026 near Hogan Dam Road and Gann Road in Calaveras County, California. Authorities say 65‑year‑old Herbert Wayne Smith was operating a chain‑saw/sawzall that produced sparks in dry vegetation, leading to his arrest on suspicion of recklessly causing the blaze.
The wildfire quickly spread, scorching more than 10,000 acres (reports list 10,373–10,384 acres), destroying seven structures, injuring one firefighter and forcing the evacuation of roughly 1,400 residents while another 1,400 remained under evacuation warnings.
