Gansu, China landslide kills 21, dozens rescued
On 7 July 2026 a landslide struck Nanhe village in the Tanchang district of Longnan city, Gansu province, north‑western China. The slide buried 33 people; rescue teams recovered 21 survivors, all of whom later died, while seven suffered injuries and five escaped unharmed.
China’s Ministry of Emergency Management activated a national level‑IV geological‑disaster response, deploying fire‑rescue units, radar equipment, and a work group to the site. Local fire brigades, mining and chemical‑rescue teams, and over 120 specialized responders were mobilised. President Xi Jinping ordered a full mobilisation of emergency services and pledged 30 million yuan (about 3.9 million €) for reconstruction of the affected area.
Earlier reports had listed five fatalities, but the official death toll was later updated to 21 as the operation concluded. The incident highlights the severe weather conditions affecting central and southern China, where torrential rain and landslides have caused additional casualties.
