Gansu, China flash floods kill 25, injure 23

On July 26 a sudden flash flood and landslide struck the tourist area of Shuangshimen in Weiyuan County, Dingxi City, Gansu Province, China. The disaster killed 25 people and injured 23, up from an earlier count of 10 dead. About 174 campers and visitors were rescued from the valley.

China’s National Commission for Disaster Prevention, Reduction and Relief has ordered a formal investigation and damage assessment. Authorities warned of further landslides as heavy rain continues across a broad swath from southwest to northeast China, issuing alerts for Beijing, Inner Mongolia and other regions. The weather bureau also cautioned that Super Typhoon Dolphin is expected to affect southeastern coastal areas from Wednesday. In neighboring Sichuan Province, more than 64,600 people have been evacuated and over 881,000 relocated since the start of the flood season. The event adds to a series of extreme weather incidents that have hit China this summer.
