Gapyeong residents urge bridge construction for Second Gyeongchun National Highway
Residents and political representatives in Gapyeong are calling for a design change to the Second Gyeongchun National Highway construction project. Local community members and Yeon Je-chang, a regional chairman for the Democratic Party, met with Lee Dong-min, head of the Wonju Regional Office of Land and Infrastructure, at the National Assembly to request that specific sections be built as bridges rather than retaining walls.
The proposed change covers a 570-meter stretch, including 270 meters north of Gapyeong Station and 300 meters near Hasaek-ri. Current plans involve constructing reinforced soil retaining walls up to 15 meters high and embankment structures up to 13 meters high. Residents argue these massive walls will divide the village, obstruct views, damage the landscape, and hinder future expansions, such as a new north exit for Gapyeong Station.
During the meeting, Yeon Je-chang emphasized the need to secure budgets and define roles for various agencies to implement the bridge design. Lee Dong-min expressed sympathy for the residents' concerns and stated that practical consultations with relevant agencies would be conducted based on the suggestions provided.
