BBVA named Global Banking Partner for COP31 climate summit in Antalya
Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria (BBVA) and its Turkish subsidiary Garanti BBVA have been appointed Global Banking Partners for the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP31). The partnership was formalised after a meeting in Ankara between Turkey's Minister of Environment and Urbanisation Murat Kurum and Garanti BBVA CEO Mahmut Akten. BBVA CEO Onur Genç said Turkey is a strategically important market for the group.
COP31 will take place from 9 to 20 November 2024 in Antalya, Turkey. The banks will work with the UN and the COP31 presidency to finance the low‑carbon transition, including sustainable finance, clean energy, electrification, circular‑economy projects, resilient cities, agriculture and biodiversity. BBVA highlighted its experience in sustainable finance, noting it had channelled €134 billion in sustainable business in 2025 and targets €700 billion between 2025‑2029. The partnership aims to combine public and private sector capabilities to demonstrate Turkey’s climate‑action determination.
