Garbagnate Hospital hosts workshop on advanced biliary surgery
The Garbagnate Hospital (ASST Rhodense) recently hosted a medical workshop focused on the latest advancements in hepato-biliary surgery. The event brought together specialists from Italian and European hospitals to discuss the integration of traditional manual techniques with modern technology.
A central feature of the workshop was a live-streamed cholecystectomy demonstrating intraoperative choledochoscopy. Using high-definition, flexible, and ultra-thin disposable digital tools, surgeons demonstrated how to explore bile ducts, use lasers to fragment stones, and remove them simultaneously with the gallbladder removal.
According to Dr. David Merlini, Director of Surgery at Garbagnate, and Dr. Roberto Lauro, the workshop's scientific lead, treating both gallbladder and bile duct stones in a single surgical session reduces patient waiting times for preparatory endoscopic exams, shortens hospital stays, and lowers infection risks and overall patient stress.
