Garching, Germany and Eisenstadt, Austria roll out traffic redesign pilots

The town council of Garching in Bavaria approved reclassifying the state road St2350 to a municipal street, giving the city greater control over traffic measures such as a 30 km/h speed limit, bike lanes and a shared‑space zone. The change follows a traffic study showing that through traffic accounts for only 14‑21 % of the flow, allowing the municipality to decide on future redesigns, including a new mixed‑use development on Münchener Straße 11 that has drawn criticism over planning exemptions.

In Eisenstadt, Austria, the Mattersburger Straße – a key entry road – will be used as a three‑month pilot project testing new concepts to improve safety for walkers and cyclists. The state and city authorities, together with the Road Safety Council, will temporarily reduce the road to a single lane and add six pedestrian crossing points, gathering data for future permanent measures.
