Gard region emerges as a new culinary destination in southern France

The Gard region in Occitanie, France, is experiencing a culinary resurgence as it emerges as a significant gastronomic destination. Following the collapse of the local silk industry in the late 19th century, the area transitioned toward viticulture and is now attracting young chefs drawn by high-quality local produce and a rural lifestyle.

Chefs, such as Michelin-starred Denis Martin of La Belle Vie, cite the ability to live close to suppliers while remaining connected to major cities via high-speed rail and digital infrastructure as key benefits. The region, which includes the town of Uzès, offers a diverse landscape of vineyards, orchards, and forests.

Local heritage remains a draw for visitors, with areas like St-Quentin-la-Poterie maintaining a tradition of pottery, and nearby sites offering historical landmarks such as the Pont du Gard and medieval villages.
