Gardaí target teenage gangs stealing cars for TikTok notoriety

Gardaí are responding to a nightly surge in vehicle thefts across Dublin and surrounding counties involving groups of teenage boys. Unlike previous theft trends where vehicles were stolen to order, these incidents are being driven by a desire for social media notoriety. The suspects record footage of the thefts and subsequent high-speed chases to upload to TikTok.

Reports indicate that the gangs often target specific Asian import models that lack immobilizing devices. In some instances, burglars are also targeting homes to steal car keys for other makes and models. The footage shared online frequently depicts reckless behavior, including driving at extreme speeds, wearing balaclavas, and driving the wrong way down motorways and sliproads to evade law enforcement.

Authorities have noted that the rapid dissemination of this content on digital platforms presents a unique challenge for real-time investigations. Gardaí are currently conducting nightly patrols and targeted operations in identified hotspots to deter these activities and apprehend those involved in both the thefts and the distribution of the footage.
