Garden pipes pose fatal risks to hedgehogs

Open pipes and shafts on residential properties, such as those used for heat pump condensate drainage, can pose a fatal risk to hedgehogs and other small animals. According to the Verband Privater Bauherren (VPB), some heat pump outdoor units drain condensate through a small hose into a vertical sewage pipe (KG-Rohr). If these pipes are not covered, small animals can fall inside and become trapped.

To prevent this, experts recommend using appropriate covers or reduction sleeves (Reduziermuffen) that seal the main pipe opening while still allowing the condensate hose to function. This protection is also advised for horizontal pipes, as some animals are unable to move backward to exit once they have crawled inside.
