Garden waste management practices in Hungary

Experts and environmental groups are highlighting the ecological benefits of retaining fallen leaves in gardens rather than collecting and disposing of them as waste. Leaves play a vital role in the natural cycle by returning nutrients to the soil, improving soil structure, and aiding water retention. They also provide essential habitats for insects and small organisms.

To prevent thick layers of leaves from blocking sunlight to the grass, experts suggest using a lawnmower to shred the leaves. This allows the organic matter to integrate into the lawn without creating a suffocating layer.

The Levegő Munkacs csoport has criticized current municipal green waste collection practices, arguing they contradict circular economy principles. The organization notes that removing leaves from both private gardens and public parks leads to nutrient deficits in the soil. While industrial composting plants in Hungary process between 250,000 and 350,000 tons of organic waste annually, much of the potential for local nutrient recycling is lost through traditional disposal methods.
