Gardening challenges rise amid heatwaves and soil moisture issues
Extreme heat and changing precipitation patterns are significantly impacting gardening and soil moisture retention. In Hungary, experts note that even when rain occurs, high-intensity bursts often lead to runoff rather than absorption, especially in compacted or sloped soils. To combat this, gardeners are encouraged to improve soil structure using organic matter, mulch, and ground cover to act as natural water reservoirs.
Plant survival during heatwaves often depends on root development. Established perennials and trees typically withstand drought better than newly planted species, which lack deep root systems. While brown leaves can be alarming, they may only represent surface damage; deep watering and mulching can aid recovery for many plants, though species like rhododendrons, azaleas, and camellias remain particularly vulnerable.
In the United States, individual gardeners report similar challenges, noting that heat has disrupted growing cycles for crops like zucchini and squash. While some vegetables struggle, certain varieties, such as the Golden King of Siberia tomato, have shown resilience against the summer heat.
