Gardening advice for autumn pruning and planting
Autumn provides a strategic window for garden maintenance, specifically for pruning and planting. To protect local biodiversity, the Ligue pour la Protection des Oiseaux (LPO) recommends avoiding hedge and tree pruning between March 16 and August 31 to prevent disturbing nesting birds. For those opting for a single annual pruning, late summer or early autumn—specifically September—is considered an ideal time to allow hedges to stabilize before winter.
When pruning perennials such as herbaceous peonies, hostas, and monarda, gardeners should wait until the foliage yellows and dies back. This cleaning process helps reduce disease risks. However, structural pruning for roses should be deferred until late winter (February or March) to avoid weakening the plants or compromising spring blooms.
Additionally, October and November are identified as optimal months for planting fruit trees, shrubs, and ornamental plants. Planting during this period allows roots to develop more effectively before the warmer seasons return.
