Gardening experts advise precautions as rain follows dry summer

Following a prolonged period of hot and dry weather in the United Kingdom, the arrival of rain presents both relief and specific challenges for gardeners. Experts warn that the transition from extreme drought to heavy rainfall requires careful management to prevent damage.

Kim Stoddart, editor of Amateur Gardening, notes that heavy rain immediately following a drought can lead to flash flooding because the parched soil may struggle to absorb moisture quickly. To mitigate risks, gardeners are advised to support taller, vulnerable plants to prevent them from toppling under the weight of water.

Other potential issues include the sudden reappearance of slugs and snails, the risk of airborne fungus on sodden plants, and damage to lawns if walked upon while they are transitioning from a dry state. Additionally, container plants may become overly saturated if they are not elevated from the ground.
