Gardening guide for autumn cabbage and garlic planting

Agricultural guidelines for autumn planting in Romania highlight specific timing and conditions for cabbage and garlic to ensure successful harvests.

For cabbage, the ideal planting window typically falls between late June and mid-July. In warmer southern and southeastern regions, transplanting may begin around June 20–25, while cooler or hilly areas may wait until the second half of July. Successful cultivation depends on allowing plants to establish roots during the summer so that head formation occurs during more temperate temperatures. Factors such as seedling strength, soil quality, and irrigation are critical.

Autumn garlic should be planted before winter to allow root development before the soil freezes. The optimal period is generally late September or October, though soil temperature is a more reliable indicator than the calendar. Planting is best performed when the soil temperature at a depth of 8–10 centimeters remains consistently between +8°C and +12°C, with air temperatures around +5°C to +10°C. Planting too early in warm soil may cause premature sprouting, while planting too late may prevent sufficient rooting.
