Gardening safety: Toxic ornamental plants pose risks to children and pets

Gardeners are advised to exercise caution with certain ornamental plants that, while visually striking, are highly toxic to humans and animals.

The Euonymus alatus, or burning bush, is noted for its intense red autumn foliage and green-yellow blooms. However, the entire plant, particularly its orange-coated fruits, is poisonous. It requires sunny to semi-shaded locations and can grow up to 3.5 meters wide.

Wisteria, known for its cascading blue, violet, or pink flowers, has also been identified as a significant risk, earning the title of 'Poisonous Plant of the Year 2024'. All parts of the plant, including roots, bark, and seeds, contain toxins such as wistarin, alkaloids, and lectins. In children, consuming as few as two seeds can cause poisoning symptoms, including abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, dilated pupils, and circulatory issues.
