Gardening strategies for winterizing plants and greenhouses

As winter approaches, gardeners and greenhouse operators are utilizing various insulation and protection techniques to safeguard plants against freezing temperatures and reduce energy costs.

For greenhouse management, preventing heat loss is a primary concern. Heat escapes through conduction, infiltration, convection, and radiation. Effective mitigation strategies include sealing gaps with weatherstripping, using horticultural bubble wrap or foil-backed insulation, and applying rigid boards to north walls. These methods help maintain stable temperatures and reduce reliance on supplemental heating systems.

For outdoor gardens, experts recommend a multi-step approach to winterization. Key practices include assessing plant types—distinguishing between annuals and perennials—and applying heavy layers of mulch to insulate roots, suppress weeds, and protect soil. Other protective measures include using burlap to shield plants from the elements and utilizing cover crops to improve soil health.
