Gardening techniques for autumn soil protection

As autumn progresses, gardeners can utilize organic materials to protect soil health and prepare for spring. Using brown cardboard as mulch in late October helps prevent nutrient leaching and erosion caused by increased rainfall. This carbon-rich method also acts as a physical barrier against weeds; one study noted that cardboard could eliminate up to 99.66% of weeds, outperforming glyphosate in certain orchard settings.

Additionally, fallen leaves serve as a valuable resource for soil amendment and biodiversity. Instead of being removed as waste, leaves can be used to protect less hardy plants from cold or integrated into the soil to improve its structure. Combining leaves with grass clippings during mowing creates a nutrient-rich compost, where leaves provide lignin for drainage and grass provides nitrogen.
