Gardening techniques for effective weed control in gravel paths

Maintaining gravel paths and paved areas without synthetic herbicides requires specific tools and soil preparation. Due to regulations like the Loi Labbé, which restricts chemical weed killers, gardeners often turn to home remedies such as white vinegar, boiling water, or salt. However, these methods have limitations: vinegar may only burn foliage without killing deep roots, and salt can permanently damage soil health through salinization.

To manage weeds effectively, professionals suggest two primary approaches. First, for existing growth, a manual fork-tipped weeder (costing approximately 10 to 15 €) can be used to extract weeds like dandelions and couch grass by the root. Second, to prevent regrowth, installing a geotextile membrane beneath the gravel acts as a barrier between the soil and the stones, limiting the organic matter accumulation that allows seeds to germinate.

For shallow-rooted annual plants, boiling water or thermal weeding can be effective, but deep-rooted perennials often require physical extraction to prevent them from returning.
