Gardening techniques for soil health and drought resistance

Traditional gardening methods are gaining renewed interest as a way to manage soil health and combat drought. One effective approach for handling heavy clay soil involves applying a thick layer of mulch, approximately 15 cm deep. This layer helps maintain thermal stability, keeping soil temperatures between 16 and 20 °C, and preserves moisture to prevent the ground from cracking. This process encourages earthworm activity, which naturally aerates and structures the soil without the need for mechanical tilling.

Another historical technique involves burying terracotta tiles vertically around plants. This method serves a dual purpose: the tiles act as a physical barrier against invasive weeds and rhizomes, while their porous nature allows them to absorb water and release it slowly to plant roots. These sustainable, zero-waste practices offer practical solutions for maintaining garden moisture during increasingly hot summer periods.
