Gardening tips for harvesting and processing pumpkin and tomato seeds

Home gardeners and cooks can maximize their harvests by properly processing and saving seeds from seasonal produce like pumpkins and tomatoes.

To prepare pumpkin seeds, the pulp should be removed using a spoon or scoop, then cleaned in water to separate the fibrous material. Once cleaned, the seeds must be thoroughly dried on a paper towel to ensure they become crispy when roasted and to prevent mold. They can be seasoned with salt, garlic, chili, or sweet options like cinnamon and honey, and should be stored in an airtight container in a dark place.

For tomatoes, saving seeds requires using non-hybrid varieties (those not labeled F1). It is essential to select fully ripe fruit from healthy plants to ensure high germination rates. The process involves fermenting the pulp and seeds in a jar for two to four days to remove the gelatinous coating that inhibits germination. After fermentation, the seeds are washed and separated from the mixture for future planting.
