Gardening tips for protecting vegetables and plants from winter frost
Gardening enthusiasts can protect their plants from winter frost and cold through various methods. For vegetables, different plants require different levels of care; while some, like chives or carrots, are more resilient, others like lettuce need more protection. Effective methods include using mulch—such as dry leaves, straw, or compost—to insulate the soil and roots, or using conifer branches to shield plants from wind and intense winter sun. Non-woven fabrics can also create a favorable microclimate for sensitive crops.
For ornamental plants like geraniums, successful overwintering requires moving them to a protected area before temperatures drop significantly, ideally when night temperatures reach 5–7 °C. Key steps include pruning the plants by one-third to one-half, removing dead flowers and diseased leaves, and repotting them into smaller containers with well-draining soil to prevent root rot caused by overwatering. The ideal overwintering environment is a bright, cool, and airy space with temperatures between 5 and 12 °C, avoiding warm rooms near radiators.
