Gardening tips for raspberry and pear harvests

Effective gardening techniques for raspberries and pears can significantly impact harvest yields and plant health.

For raspberries (Rubus idaeus), the distinction between remontant (everbearing) and non-remontant varieties is crucial. Non-remontant varieties produce a single large harvest between June and July on two-year-old canes. In contrast, remontant varieties can offer two harvest periods—once in late summer (August to October) on new growth and again in June on the lower part of the same stems—provided they are pruned correctly.

Pears (Pyrus communis) are noted for their resilience, capable of withstanding temperatures as low as -20 °C. To ensure a generous fruit yield and prevent disease, late winter pruning is essential. This process involves removing dead wood and crossing branches to improve airflow and light penetration to the center of the tree, allowing the plant to concentrate energy on fruit-bearing buds.
