Artist Gareth Fuller creates personal geography through urban mind maps

British artist Gareth Fuller creates large-scale pen and ink drawings known as ‘mind maps’ to represent his explorations of cities. Rather than traditional, to-scale atlas maps, Fuller’s ‘personal geography’ focuses on the emotional portrayal of a location through the lens of human experience.

In his recent work centered on Washington, DC, the maps incorporate intricate details such as the Potomac River, patterns inspired by the DC metro system, and references to the National Arboretum. The drawings also include symbolic nods to local culture and politics, such as the number 51, representing the movement for DC statehood.

Fuller develops these works by spending months or years exploring cities on foot. He aims to capture more than just physical landmarks, integrating anecdotes and conversations gathered during his travels to combat the loss of discovery often associated with modern digital navigation.
