For more than four decades orange plastic phones featuring the cartoon cat Garfield have been washing up on the rugged shoreline of Brittany, France. The pieces, remnants of a 1984 promotional telephone, were traced to a shipping container that was lost at sea in the mid‑1980s and has periodically released its cargo during storms and tides.

Filmmaker Zack Grant documented the phenomenon in the short film “Silly Little Plastic Cat,” using the quirky debris to illustrate the broader issue of ocean plastic waste. The film notes that in 2025 alone nearly 1,500 shipping containers were lost, with less than ten percent recovered, underscoring the scale of marine pollution. Local residents have embraced the Garfield phones as a mascot for beach clean‑up efforts, often partnering with groups such as the Surfrider Foundation to remove the litter and repurpose the items.
