Gargano and Umbra Forest face ecosystem stress from water shortages

Forest ecosystems in the Gargano region and the Umbra Forest are showing signs of severe water and thermal stress. This phenomenon, known as ‘summer browning,’ is characterized by yellowing leaves and thinning canopies.

Experts note that this is not a disease caused by pathogens, but a physiological response to chronic water shortages and high temperatures. Since 2022, the impact has shifted from isolated trees and urban areas to entire forested slopes, affecting beech forests, oak forests, and Mediterranean scrubland. Biologists emphasize the need for continuous monitoring to assess the resilience and biodiversity of these local ecosystems.
