Gargano region hit by severe storms and violent wind gusts
Severe thunderstorms and violent wind gusts have caused significant damage across the Gargano peninsula in northern Puglia, Italy. The most critical impacts were reported in the areas of Vico del Gargano and Peschici.
In Vico del Gargano, the wind caused trees, advertising billboards, and public lighting poles to fall. Damage to property included roofs losing tiles, solar panels being swept off buildings, and a chimney falling onto a vehicle. A canopy also collapsed onto a parked car, though no injuries were reported.
Local authorities, including Mayor Lello Sciscio, have advised citizens to avoid areas with large trees, such as the Villa Comunale and playground zones, while officials assess the stability of vegetation. Firefighters are currently on-site managing the aftermath. Meteorologists suggest the intense weather may have been caused by a downburst or a possible waterspout/tornado, driven by a cold front moving across the peninsula.
