Garlasco murder case: debates resurface over 2007 investigation

The Garlasco murder case, involving the 2007 killing of Chiara Poggi, remains a subject of intense debate nearly 19 years later. Recent discussions have centered on criticisms of the original 2007 investigation. Attorney Antonio De Rensis, representing Alberto Stasi, described the initial probe as “one of the worst in Italian judicial history,” citing statements from prosecutor Giulia Pezzino regarding “relevant omissions” in the investigation.

In response to these criticisms, Luciano Garofano, a consultant for the Poggi family and former commander of the RIS, argued that errors were inevitable given the technical and scientific limitations of the era. He noted that the necessity for forensic copies only became apparent in 2008.

The Poggi family, marking the anniversary of Chiara’s death on August 13, has expressed a desire to remember her in silence. They have recently faced additional pressures, including accusations of obstructing investigations related to Andrea Sempio and dealing with social media harassment and media scrutiny following new investigations that offer a different reconstruction than the final court ruling that convicted Stasi.
