Alberto Stasi: Milan Prosecutor General reviews Garlasco murder case

The legal proceedings regarding the 2007 murder of Chiara Poggi in Garlasco have reached a critical juncture. The Milan General Prosecutor's Office, led by Francesca Nanni, has completed its examination of the case files. This review is a precursor to a potential opinion on a request for a retrial for Alberto Stasi, who was definitively sentenced to 16 years in prison for the crime.

A new investigation by the Pavia Prosecutor's Office has identified Andrea Sempio as a potential perpetrator, which has prompted the push to exonerate Stasi. Defense attorney Elisabetta Aldrovandi confirmed that the Milan General Prosecutor's Office has finished reviewing the documents related to the case.

Legal expert and former magistrate Gianrico Carofiglio has commented on the case, stating that based on available evidence, Stasi should have been acquitted. He noted that changes to the criminal procedure code in 2017 might have prevented Stasi's subsequent appeals and conviction.
