Garlasco murder case: missed hair evidence and suspended family wiretaps

Italian investigators explained why hair strands found in the sink of Chiara Poggi's home were never collected for DNA testing. A RIS officer said the material was not deemed a priority at the time because there was no certainty the sink had been used by the killer and because a single hair can be easily displaced. Photographs from August 2007 and October 2005 showed the hairs, but the scientific analysis could not conclusively link them to the crime scene.

Separately, police intercepted the mobile phones of Stefania and Paola Cappa, cousins of the victim, along with other family members, for five months. The surveillance yielded only sixteen conversations mentioning Garlasco and produced no useful forensic leads. Interceptions were halted after investigators inspected a nearby canal following a tip about a heavy bag being discarded on the murder day, but found no evidence. Lawyers for the family criticized the breadth of the taps and the lack of prosecutorial value.
