Italian prosecutors to file four new forensic reports on Andrea Sempio in Garlasco murder case

The Public Prosecutor’s Office in Pavia will submit four new expert reports by the end of August to strengthen the case against Andrea Sempio, the sole suspect in the 2007 murder of 26‑year‑old Chiara Poggi in Garlasco. The pending consultations cover DNA analysis of the victim’s nail sample, which investigators say matches Sempio’s paternal line; a re‑examination of shoe‑print evidence, including the disputed “pallini” imprint and its compatibility with Sempio’s foot; and a psychiatric assessment to evaluate his personality and possible dangerousness. These reports are intended to consolidate the dossier before the formal closure of the preliminary investigation scheduled for 28 September, after which prosecutors may seek an indictment.

Separately, Italy’s data‑protection authority has imposed a fine of about €60,000 on media group RTI (including the programmes Le Iene and Zona Bianca) for broadcasting graphic images of Poggi’s corpse, ordering the removal of the offending footage. The authority ruled that the images violated the victim’s dignity and were not essential to public information.

Both the new forensic inquiries and the media sanctions are part of the ongoing scrutiny of the Garlasco case, which remains a high‑profile criminal investigation in Italy.
