Andrea Sempio's mother hospitalized amid Garlasco case pressure

Daniela Ferrari, the 66‑year‑old mother of Andrea Sempio – the primary suspect in the reopened Garlasco murder investigation of 2007 – was taken to Vigevano hospital on 17 June 2026 after an apparent overdose of tranquiliser medication. She was treated with gastric lavage and placed in intensive care for observation, but doctors said she is not in immediate danger of death.

Her defence lawyer, Liborio Cataliotti, described the incident as a “wake‑up call” and urged the media and public to lower the tone surrounding the case, stressing that Ferrari is not a suspect and is suffering from the relentless media scrutiny. Similar calls for restraint were echoed by TV host Alberto Matano, who told viewers that the programme "La Vita in Diretta" will not be drawn into the "corrida" of the Garlasco debate, and by journalist Selvaggia Lucarelli, who criticised the harsh online discourse.

The episode comes as the Pavia prosecutor’s office prepares to advance new charges against Andrea Sempio, while other aspects of the long‑standing case – such as disputed shoe‑print evidence and a new witness describing a blond woman on a bicycle near the crime scene – remain under investigation. The family’s ongoing legal battles and media exposure continue to fuel public interest in the decades‑old murder case.
