Garment care: clothing steamer performance and laundry maintenance tips

Consumer organization Testaankoop evaluated 14 portable clothing steamers from brands including Calor, Braun, Philips, and SteamOne. The testing focused on vertical de-wrinkling capabilities for occasional use. While steamers offer advantages such as being compact, requiring no ironing board, and being safer for delicate fabrics, they do not fully replace traditional irons. They generally have lower steam output, making them less effective for stubborn wrinkles or thick fabrics like denim.

Regarding laundry maintenance, white streaks and spots on black clothing are often caused by improper washing habits. Common causes include using excessive amounts of detergent that fails to dissolve completely, overloading the washing machine drum which prevents proper rinsing, and the use of washing powders which are more prone to leaving visible residue than liquid detergents.
